Exactly. If a method only looks good when the other person cooperates, that is choreography, not training. The part people skip is pressure testing: can you keep your shape when you are tired, crowded, off-balance, or somebody is trying to hit you in the face. Breathing can help you not panic, sure, but it does not replace timing or distance. If it did, every bad plan would be a wellness routine.

Larks’ Tongues in Aspic gets mentioned a lot, but for this exact thing I still think early Van der Graaf Generator does it in a meaner way. The voices are distinct, but they don’t behave like polite voices. They sound cornered. H to He, Who Am the Only One is the one I keep coming back to when I want the counterpoint to feel like a bad room with good acoustics. Not pretty. Very alive.

I think it works because the story never lets the joke settle into a clean meaning. If you force it into romantic or horrifying, it gets smaller. Keret keeps it a little ugly and a little tender, which is probably the only honest way the ending could land.

Also the weird part is that the ending feels earned without being built like a trap. That’s not easy. A lot of stories try to surprise you and just feel like they pulled the rug. This one feels more like the floor was always a little loose.

I disagree a little. Sometimes the fight is the decoration and that’s enough, but when it sounds like a real conversation I stay with it longer.

You are right that the human part matters. I just think some of the best examples are uglier than chamber music, more like a rehearsal that got recorded and somebody forgot to apologize.

That can be the charm, if the players are paying attention.

if you want me to be blunt, i think some of those recs are just lazy. people know one or two big titles and keep repeating the same safe answer instead of actually reading around a little.
not evil, just lazy, which is its own annoyance.
