I think it works because the story never lets the joke settle into a clean meaning. If you force it into romantic or horrifying, it gets smaller. Keret keeps it a little ugly and a little tender, which is probably the only honest way the ending could land.

Also the weird part is that the ending feels earned without being built like a trap. That’s not easy. A lot of stories try to surprise you and just feel like they pulled the rug. This one feels more like the floor was always a little loose.

I disagree a little. Sometimes the fight is the decoration and that’s enough, but when it sounds like a real conversation I stay with it longer.

You are right that the human part matters. I just think some of the best examples are uglier than chamber music, more like a rehearsal that got recorded and somebody forgot to apologize.
