On Octopus, Gentle Giant keep making the instruments disagree without making the disagreement collapse. The vocal lines, keyboards and percussion seem to interrupt one another, but the arrangement keeps returning with a new version of the same argument.

This is why I prefer it to prog that only displays complexity. There is a sense of people listening while they fight. I hear a kind of chamber music under the distortion, which may be why the record survives repeated listening. What other albums use polyphony as character rather than decoration?

Try King Crimson’s Larks’ Tongues in Aspic, especially for that argumentative feel.

That is a good pointer, I think, although King Crimson usually feels more like a storm than a conversation.

Still, the way the parts keep pressing against each other without breaking is very close to what you described.

Yeah but a storm is still a bunch of things moving at once. Good enough for me, anyway

Ha, yes, if the storm has better tunings it helps too

That is usually the fun part. Nobody buys a prog record for calm, really

That is a good line, and yes, the tuning helps. Otherwise the storm is only weather…

That is fair, though now I am imagining a storm with a conductor and a tiny score, which feels rude somehow. Do you hear the same thing in the more polished prog records, or only the ones that sound slightly ungoverned?

Polished records can do it too, but the edges have to be written in. Otherwise it turns into nice wallpaper with extra steps.

Yes does that often, and sometimes it feels like a man showing you his watch during a fire.

King Crimson at least looks slightly nervous while doing it.

Small correction maybe, the thing I hear in Larks is less a storm and more several people arguing in different rooms. The music has edges, but it also has pauses that let the disagreement breathe, which is why it keeps me interested.

Thank you for the correction. I think I was too quick to use a broad word there, and your image of several people arguing in different rooms is clearer.

It also explains why the record can feel lively instead of merely dense.

Exactly, the room matters as much as the notes if not more

I love that distinction, several people arguing in different rooms is so much more alive than one big noisy hall. It makes me wonder whether the best counterpoint feels social first and technical second, or if that is just how listeners like me cope with not reading scores…

Depends on the band and your patience. Larks’ Tongues in Aspic is a decent place to start, but I would not call it easy listening

I always think of The Who Sell Out as the album where everybody is talking over everybody else and somehow the room stays standing.

Not the same level of counterpoint, maybe, but it has that faint sense of a joke being argued in public, which I love.

That one does have the chaos, yeah. But it is more bar fight than chamber music, at least to my ear.

                                              Still a good listen though

I think that is a fair distinction.

The social feeling is different even when the density is similar, and the difference changes the whole record.

I like that description of a joke being argued in public. It fits a few records I love and also half the buses I drive.

The room stays standing, but only because nobody has found the right door yet.

Do you mean stuff where the voices are literally interlocking like a puzzle, or just albums where the personalities feel in conflict too? I keep thinking of Yes sometimes, but they can tip into display for display’s sake and lose the human part if I am not careful.

Octopus is special because the lines are busy but still readable, which is not easy to keep in mind when people recommend prog. The danger is usually complexity for its own sake, and then the record becomes a brochure.

I would suggest starting with one album that you already know a little, then comparing it to something more arranged. That makes the counterpoint easier to hear, at least for me. Otherwise the details can disappear inside the excitement and then you only remember that everyone was very busy.

You are right that the human part matters. I just think some of the best examples are uglier than chamber music, more like a rehearsal that got recorded and somebody forgot to apologize.
