i’m probably just grumpy because too many recommendations sound like they were generated from one blurbed paragraph. if you want, i can try to pull together a few non-family titles that lean crime or social pressure instead, no fancy theory.

left wall and colder after close sounds like a bad draft to me.
check the vent first, spooky secondprobably when the hvac guy starts shrugging and everyone else starts crossing themselves
classic sign of trouble
what recent books have you already tried, though? that would help narrow it down fast.
If you do not mind a little darkness, crime fiction is probably the cleanest detour away from family setup.ha. buildings do talk, usually in maintenance tickets
never in a nice clear voice either
good question. if you are reading after work, followable matters more than people admit. a clever mess can be fun, but if you are already tired it just becomes a brick in the hand.
i’d push back a little on the ‘not mainly family drama’ part, because a lot of recent tamil books that travel well are still family-centered in some way. but if you want something else, crime and social satire are where i’d start, less domestic tea, more street level pressure. check for newer stuff around police corruption or small-town scams, that seems to be the lane.
that’s the kind of thing that makes a shift feel longer than it is.
Exactly. A little more time in hot oil, a little less optimism.
Yeah, toasted is the difference. raw cumin is just seed with ambitions.
Maybe. Lentils are innocent more often than not.
I’d serve it fast, yeah.
Any pause gives the spices time to sulk.Yeah, covered makes it softer. Not always bad, just different.
Use the hot oil to wake it up, or it just sits there looking decorative.
