There is a small gallery at work that is always the same temperature during the day. After closing, the room gets noticeably colder even though the thermostat is in the next gallery and the building system says nothing changed.

The odd part is not the cold. It is that the security camera shows visitors pausing at the doorway and looking into the room, but the room is empty on the footage. They are not looking at an object. They look at the left wall, then step away. I have checked the floor plan and there is no missing space behind it. At what point does a building become an unreliable witness?

That sounds less like a thermostat problem and more like the room has a favorite corner.

If visitors keep staring at the left wall, I would want to know whether the cold spot is there too. Buildings can lie, sure, but usually by draft and bad seals, not…

I once tested a conference room that did something similar. It was not haunted, just a return vent hidden behind a display case, which made the doorway feel like a boundary in a way people noticed before we did.

that’s the kind of thing that makes a shift feel longer than it is.

I do not think the vent example transfers cleanly. In your case the camera sees people reacting before they enter, which suggests the cue is visual or spatial first, not just temperature once they are inside.

Fair, though I still think the doorway reaction matters because it gives you the best clue about where perception starts slipping. If the cue is before entry, I would look hard at light, reflection, or whatever is bleeding out of that wall.

Could be the wall telling stories then

ha. buildings do talk, usually in maintenance tickets

never in a nice clear voice either

That is exactly the problem. The message comes through as a pattern of discomfort, which is less satisfying than a voice and far more common than people like to admit. I have seen offices where the “haunting” was just a thermostat drift plus a noisy hallway, and the staff preferred the ghost because it had a cleaner narrative.

Cleaner narrative, worse bill. Ghosts never get a work order.

True, but the bill is not the only metric. If the room keeps producing the same reportable symptom, somebody should still log it before they decide the story is good enough.

Log it sure. But I still want the building guy with the smoke pencil, not a séance.

Right, the reportable symptom is the thing. I would still separate the complaint from the explanation though because a bad story spreads faster than a bad smell and usually costs more to fix.

Agreed. The explanation should stay provisional until someone measures the room properly, otherwise you end up preserving a narrative instead of a building condition.

Which is, unfortunately, standard practice in a lot of places.

That’s the municipal version of literature, honestly. Chapter one is always leaks.

I would not jump from repeated behavior to a single hidden cause. The simpler explanation is that the doorway changes acoustics and temperature together, and people…

Could be air movement more than mystery. A cold spill from the hall, a vent you are not seeing, or a door closer leaving the gap wrong, something simple wearing a spooky coat. I have watched a break room do that in January and everybody swore the building was mad at us. It usually was just old seals and bad timing.

That makes me wonder whether the left wall is just where the airflow lands. If the camera angle is fixed, the room can look empty while still feeling occupied by a draft, which is a very dumb trick for architecture to pull.

That doorway reaction is the interesting part. If people are pausing before they feel the cold, then the room may be carrying something visual or acoustic that the camera is flattening out, which is annoyingly poetic for a building.

I had a loading dock once where the cold air made people slow down before they could explain it.

Turned out the big bay door was cracked just enough to pull air and make everybody feel like the place was watching them. Not ghosty, just bad mechanics and a mean draft.

Probably when the people in charge start calling a maintenance issue a vibe. Still, the left wall detail is the one I would keep poking at. The spooky part may just be the exact place the system fails to tell a coherent story.
