People call everything chi when they mean breathing and balance. Fine. Those matter. But I keep seeing videos and posts where that turns into a claim that you dont need timing, distance or a way to deal with somebody hitting back. That is a bad sell.
A move that only works when the other guy helps you is not much of a move. If the method is any good it should still look like something under pressure, even if it is ugly.
I am not asking for a cage fight miracle. I just want to know what actually carries over when things get messy and what falls apart right away.

The useful distinction is not chi versus footwork, it is internal work versus external proof. Breathing and balance may improve timing a little, but if the method cannot still keep structure when somebody is trying to strike or shove, then the claim is too large
I would ask very simply what survives when distance collapses and the other person does not cooperate. That is where many beautiful ideas become decoration

yeah. another thing people skip is the floor work. if your stance turns into a slip on rough concrete or wet mat, all the chi talk gets real quiet fast.
I want to know what still works when the place is bad too, not just when the room is perfect and everybody is standing nice

Exactly. If a method only looks good when the other person cooperates, that is choreography, not training. The part people skip is pressure testing: can you keep your shape when you are tired, crowded, off-balance, or somebody is trying to hit you in the face. Breathing can help you not panic, sure, but it does not replace timing or distance. If it did, every bad plan would be a wellness routine.

sure, but people also act like footwork is magic by itself
if your base is bad, your chi is just a bad posture with better branding. breathing can keep you from gassing out and getting sloppy, fine. it does not make you hard to hit, and it does not save you when the other guy closes distance and starts making your day rough
the real question is simple: does the thing still hold up when somebody is trying to break the shape, or does it only work in demo mode
