Another useful example, if you want counterpoint doing more than showing off, is early Talk Talk. The parts are often simple on their own, but the mix lets them behave like separate decisions being made at once, so the tension is structural rather than just busy. I also think the question is whether the lines keep their identity under stress — if they do, you can hear character; if they do not, you only get blur. Do you think the best examples need clear melodic separation, or can the voices still count as distinct when the edges are smeared a little?

Some albums make polyphony feel dramatic because the mix keeps the edges clean, but others leave the lines half-interlaced and you have to sort the image yourself. That second kind can be more human, or just more annoying, depending on the day.
Maybe the real test is whether the parts still have separate weather when you play it quietly. If they do, I trust the counterpoint more.

If you want intimacy, look for ensembles of 8–16 and recordings that keep the room present, not blurred into reverb. The Hilliard Ensemble, The Tallis Scholars in smaller-scaled Renaissance pieces, and the Gesualdo Six are all worth a try.

True, but the bill is not the only metric. If the room keeps producing the same reportable symptom, somebody should still log it before they decide the story is good enough.
