If you read it as a family story first i think the book still bites harder than that. But maybe the clean answer is the wrong target anyway. it feels like it keeps asking who gets to translate pain and why they think that helps

Small correction, the bodies and voices are not just surreal decoration here. They keep showing how the refusal gets translated by other people before it can speak for itself. That is the nasty bit. It is less about symbolism and more about who gets to say what your no means

No i think youre giving the husband too much neatness there. He is not just protecting pride he is also lazy in the moral sense, happy to let the system do the dirty work. That is why the book hurts. The harm does not need a villain with a plan, just people who prefer the furniture left where it is

What got me was the quiet parts more than the wild ones. that dinner table pressure, the way nobody asks the right question, just keeps poking at her like a stubborn breaker. And the body stuff lands because the ordinary people around her already treat her like a problem to be fixed not a person to hear

              Yeah, and that’s the trap
people keep doing interpretation as if it were permission

Fair enough, but i think the protection and the family control are the same…

Yeah i get that. The shifting narrators keep everybody squinting at her like they own the meaning and that gets ugly fast. Surreal part is one thing but the family control stuff is worse, because it feels ordinary. People always want to call it illness or drama or art when maybe it’s just coercion with a nicer label and a hot meal attached

porch light and letters, sure. the plot is basically paperwork for the soul, and somehow that works

yeah and if the jar is old dont try to save it with more pepper. That just makes the cupboard louder

fresh pepper matters, sure. But even good pepper gets lost if you toss it in too early and boil the life out of it

that part is on the method
