“Just Taken” made me unexpectedly quiet.
I kept waiting for the extra joke or the clever mechanism and was glad you mostly left it alone

maybe, yeah. older rereads can make Dana feel less like a narrator and more like somebody you know who’s trying not to panic. i had that with a friend after a rough job once, same sharp voice, same tiny pauses. not the same situation at all, obviously, but the human part landed harder.
lol exactly, Rufus is the kind of guy people keep trying to file into one box, and the book won’t let it happen. one read and you think you’ve got him, then nope, he does something nastier.
I like that it stays ugly instead of tidy, even when…I would tell someone to read it in one or two sittings if they can, and maybe keep a note beside them for the parts that snag.
That book hits harder when you don’t keep pausing to “process” it like homework, honestly.yeah, that pressure cooker thing is exactly it. i think the book gets under your skin because nobody gets to stand back and explain themselves cleanly. even the ugly parts feel lived-in, which is weirdly harder to shake than a lecture ever is.
