My broadest note is that the collection is strongest when the impossible thing forces a choice, not when the impossible thing is merely clever.
That does not mean every story needs a wound under it. Please don’t do that either.
The lighter pieces are necessary
Ordering question: I understand why “The One Who Stayed” opens.
It tells the reader very quickly that the comedy and the hurt are going to occupy the same room.

That contradiction feels more human than a motive paragraph would.
Right. There is envy in it too, which keeps the narrator from standing safely outside the joke.
That straight face does almost all the work.
If the narrator winked even once, half the story would evaporate.
If somebody has no public social history, there should be another route. Any review system should be quick enough that normal people do not lose interest before they arrive.
The “lucky” line is both joke and thesis for me.
He keeps measuring moral outcomes with the vocabulary of a career office. That is where a lot of the comedy lives.
Exactly. Local knowledge or literary knowledge can be a bonus without becoming the entrance fee.
That applies elsewhere too. I would not internationalize the Israeli details just to make every reader equally comfortable
I would not ask for private accounts or messages. Rotating volunteers seems healthier than one permanent person deciding who belongs.
This is much better than a quiz. A quiz selects for people who are good at quizzes, which is not currently one of our social goals. Member referrals are useful context, but requiring them would close the door to genuinely new people.

Agreed. Explaining her would make the story more balanced in a workshop sense and much worse as a story.
This is probably as close as we get to screening for ‘can share a room’ without pretending we can measure character.
Does anyone find the last image sentimental?
I did on first reading. On the second, much less. I think I had supplied more reassurance than the story actually gives us.
