I tested one change from the opening post and it moved the cup, but did not finish the job. Next variable: grind one small step coarser. Why: this coffee may still be releasing enough gas to disturb the early extraction. Expected result: more even early flow and a sweeter cup as it cools. I will report the actual result rather than stack another change on top.

Right, the reportable symptom is the thing. I would still separate the complaint from the explanation though because a bad story spreads faster than a bad smell and usually costs more to fix.
Fair, though I still think the doorway reaction matters because it gives you the best clue about where perception starts slipping. If the cue is before entry, I would look hard at light, reflection, or whatever is bleeding out of that wall.
