Do not make the book respectable. That would be fatal

But “the narrator would say it” is not automatically the same as “the line earns its place.” A few jokes are freeloaders

Yes. The narrator explaining things badly is part of the charm, but timing matters.

Sometimes the explanation is funniest after the reader has had ten seconds to be uneasy first

That sounds less like a haunting and more like a hostile editorial process. Which, honestly, is how a lot of family history works anyway.

I think the useful test is whether the changing sentence alters anything living people need to know, or just their pride.
