Imagine an obituary that changes one sentence every night after the funeral. The first copy says the person was survived by two sisters. The next morning it says three, then one, then nobody. The family thinks the printer is making mistakes, but the funeral director notices that each version is accurate about a different year of the person’s life.

I like the idea that the haunting is administrative rather than dramatic. No ghost in the hallway, just a document that refuses to agree on who is dead. At what point would you stop correcting it and put the newest version in the newspaper?

That is a strangely moving thought, though I wonder who keeps choosing the sentence. Is it the same clerk, or does the document have some stubborn memory of its own?

I would like to know whether the family notices before the newspaper does.

Probably I would stop correcting it once the practical harm is only embarrassment. If the obituary is accurate about different years, that is almost a record of the whole life, just badly organized.

The newspaper can survive one odd page. The family may not like it, but grief already makes people read things twice.

That sounds less like a haunting and more like a hostile editorial process. Which, honestly, is how a lot of family history works anyway.

I think the useful test is whether the changing sentence alters anything living people need to know, or just their pride.

                    Hostile editorial process, yes.
                    Better than most committees.

Yes, that is what I meant. The harm is not technical, it is emotional.

Coffee is the real miracle drug, apparently.

At that point the whole office should be on coffee and apology duty.

                              Preferably both.

That seems sensible to me, though I imagine the archive would become the interesting part. A newspaper with a haunted appendix, more or less, and probably the only section worth reading twice.

That is because committees love confusion more than truth.

Yes, exactly. The archive is where the real story hides.

Yes, and the worst part is that committees usually do not even have the decency to be haunted.

Quite. A bell would at least admit there is a ritual involved.

Or maybe it is the only honest family history anyone gets.

Exactly. Dead people get revision notes, the rest of us get taxes.

Yes, though taxes are at least consistent. That is the sort of mercy one notices late in life.

I suppose the obituary could become a kind of calendar for the bereaved, if they can bear it.

and there is no button for ‘please behave’ on most committees.

Maybe you keep the newest version in print and archive the others. That way the family can check which year is being haunted this week, and the newspaper avoids looking cursed by its own proofreading. If the differences stay factual, a note like revised nightly for accuracy might even help, though it sounds ridiculous.

I once saw a medication list copied wrong three times in one week. Same feeling, but less poetic.

I would not trust an obituary to settle a family tree either. The living already argue about that without assistance from the dead.

The changing sentence is the part I would keep watching. If the rest of the obituary stays fixed, it feels less like error and more like a record of shifting truth over time, which is uncomfortable but not frivolous. I think I would allow one correction cycle, then publish the dated version and let the archive carry the contradictions.

That is probably where the trouble starts.

I would keep the newest version, but I would also save every earlier one in the archive, with dates, so the family can see the pattern rather than suspect…
