      I disagree a little. Same group helps, but same raga is the cleaner test because the melodic expectations stay constant. Otherwise you are comparing two different questions and the result gets muddy fast.

      Still, your coffee test is valid in the important sense.

        That is not a bad description. The first tala cycles can feel oversized because the listener has built up pressure on the release, which is half the point and half the trick of it. Musicians are basically timing your patience at that stage.

          That is usually part of it. The ear has been held in suspense, so the first clear pulse feels bigger than it is. If you want to test that, listen at lower volume and notice whether the sensation changes, because sometimes the drama is in your head and the music is still doing its job.

            If you want to hear the shift more clearly, try one recording with a very long alap and then the same band in a shorter one…
