August 5, 2026 at 2:54 pm #4278Machine / revision: Breville Barista Express BES870
Country / voltage: Australia / 230V
Grinder / burrs / setting / calibration: Built-in conical burr grinder; factory conical burr set; external 4, internal burr 5; burr carrier reseated.
Basket / portafilter: 18 g IMS precision basket; stock spouted portafilter (54 mm system where applicable).
Bean / roast date: Honduras Marcala medium roast; roast date 2026-07-28.
Dose / yield / extraction time: 19.0 g in, 38 g out, 30 s target/current reference.
Water / temperature: filter-jug water from moderately hard tap; factory brew temperature after a 10-minute preheat.
Exact symptom: Clean/descale indicators keep alternating after the maintenance cycle.
Tests already performed: Repeat the documented reset/completion sequence from the manual without power interruption Already cleaned the obvious removable parts and repeated the test once.
Diagnostic photograph or video: close-up of the basket/puck plus a short flow video. Before I turn a small repair into an expensive repair, what would you check next on this Breville Barista Express BES870? Clean/descale indicators keep alternating after the maintenance cycle.

Confirmed solution: The fault was isolated with the case still safe to inspect, the failed wear component was replaced, and the machine passed repeated heat/pressure cycles afterward. I am leaving the original numbers above intact so the next person can see what changed.

Short answer: Start with the simple reproducible test before buying parts.
Applies to which model/revision: Breville Barista Express BES870.
Likely cause: The symptom points first to a setup, wear-part or calibration issue that can be separated from a major failure.
Test to perform next: Return one variable to a known reference, repeat twice, and record whether the symptom changes in the same direction.
Expected result: If that subsystem is the cause, the symptom should change predictably rather than randomly.
Safety limit: Stop if mains voltage, exposed wiring, a pressurized hot boiler, repeated GFCI trips or an unknown leak path is involved. Unplug, cool fully and use qualified service.
Evidence: First-hand owner experience with the same model/configuration; not a manufacturer diagnosis.-

Not the exact revision, but I had a closely related setup with the same general failure mode. The thing that saved time was separating the Built-in conical burr grinder / puck-prep side from the machine side instead of adjusting both together. Similar experience, not proof for your unit.

Counterpoint: I would not order parts yet. The symptom still overlaps with a calibration/setup problem, and a new part can make the evidence worse.

The useful documented check is the revision-specific maintenance/service sequence, not a generic espresso-machine video. For Breville Barista Express BES870, verify the manual procedure and part number before opening or ordering anything. If the documented test does not reproduce the fault, stop treating that subsystem as proven.

This is a good example of why the exact revision and test history matter. “My Breville Barista Express BES870 is bad” produces twenty theories; the measurements above at least give the theories somewhere to die.

For what it is worth, i have nothing useful except sympathy and a strong suspicion the machine can smell fear.

Inference only: because the symptom is repeatable and your listed tests already rule out some obvious causes, I would suspect the narrowest remaining mechanical/setup path before a board-level failure. I would not buy a part from that inference alone.

The useful bit in this thread is that nobody has to guess which Breville Barista Express BES870 or Built-in conical burr grinder is involved. Half of repair advice goes bad before that point.

This is where a cheap measurement beats another theory. Record the same test twice before and twice after the change.

I would mark the part you changed and photograph the original position before going farther. Future you is an unreliable witness.

One small follow-up: repeat the test from a cold start once. Heat can hide or create a fault, and “it worked five minutes later” is useful information.
