Soft Machine’s Third works for me when I need to stay awake, but it is definitely not background music in the normal way. The long bits keep changing shape and then I realize I’ve been doing the same task for an hour. I guess that is a recommendation? Maybe don’t start with it if you have to count inventory.
yes, and then everybody acts surprised when the dark shows up. I keep thinking of workplaces where the official words get so old they stop describing the room at all.
The book does that with a neat little knife.
one small correction, the objects are from the planet but I dont think the book treats them like a simple monster thing. The crew’s language breaks first, which is scarier to me.

exactly, the slips matter more than the big statements. If it were too neat I think the whole ship would feel fake, like everyone already had the metaphor explained to them. The awkwardness keeps it alive and a little sad.
yeah I think the distance is the point, honestly. It makes the crew sound trapped in a system that cant say what it is seeing, and that feels creepy in a good way.
But I also think the little repeats and slips are what let the emotion through.
