Yeah I get that. The books I liked best were the ones where you could smell the rooms even if nobody was throwing a spear around. Maybe try Africa or South Asia too, there is loads there if you want daily life and not just empire noise

I always remember the little stuff more than the big speeches. One book had a woman counting lamp oil and rice for half the year and somehow that told me more than any battle scene ever did. If you like that vibe you might check Latin American historical fiction or stuff set in rural China too

Those books can be slow in a good way. Like the story is actually watching people live instead of pose for a statue

I’m with you on the room doing the work, but I’d add that some records fake spaciousness with too much reverb. That can feel like perfume on a bar rag. The real thing has shape, not just haze.
