September 9, 2026 at 3:00 pm #5549Question or objective: learn tea differences before buying gongfu equipment
Tea category: beginner loose leaf transition
Exact product: basic black, green and oolong sampler
Vendor: LeafHarbor Tea
Origin: mixed
Cultivar, if known: mixed
Harvest season/year: 2025-2026
Processing or roast: mixed
Cake/batch number, if relevant: cake/lot noted above where applicable; otherwise N/A
Purchase/opening date: purchased 2026-08-13; opened 2026-09-07
Storage since purchase: sealed original pouch inside a dark cupboard
Style: Western
Vessel: existing mug + basket infuser
Vessel material: ceramic + stainless
Nominal and actual filled capacity: 300 ml filled
Filter or strainer: large basket
Kettle: basic variable-temperature kettle
Vessel preheated: yes
Dry leaf weight: 3-4 g
Water volume: 300 ml
Water temperature: tea dependent
Water source or mineral profile: filtered tap water
Rinse: 5-10 s where noted by the recipe; otherwise none
Infusion schedule: 2-4 min
Agitation: none
Was each infusion completely decanted?: lift basket
Aroma: clearer than bags
Sweetness: varies
Bitterness: tea dependent
Astringency: tea dependent
Body/texture: medium
Flavour: tea dependent
Aftertaste: cleaner
Number of satisfying infusions: 1-2
Exact problem: moving from tea bags to loose leaf with minimal new gear
Desired result: learn tea differences before buying gongfu equipment
Variable changed: infuser type
Previous value: tea ball
New value: large basket
Result: leaves opened properly and flavour improved immediately
Dry-leaf photograph: not attached yet
Liquor photograph: not attached yet
Wet-leaf photograph: not attached yet
Video if pouring or drainage is relevant: not relevantI am trying to solve a constraint rather than assemble the officially correct tea altar. The current experiment is infuser type: tea ball to large basket. leaves opened properly and flavour improved immediately.
The goal is learn tea differences before buying gongfu equipment. First-hand reports from similarly constrained setups are more useful to me than a list of everything I could buy if the constraint disappeared.

Long-term report
Direct recommendation: repeat the session with large basket.
Applies to: basic black, green and oolong sampler / beginner loose leaf transition in a setup close to existing mug + basket infuser.
Evidence: repeated sessions over time.
Change: repeat the session with large basket.
Expected effect: the cup should move toward learn tea differences before buying gongfu equipment if that variable is causal.
Observed result: leaves opened properly and flavour improved immediately.
Limitations: Water chemistry may change the result, so I would not generalize this to every city.
Commercial relationship: none.-

Controlled test
Direct recommendation: repeat the same recipe on a second day.
Applies to: basic black, green and oolong sampler / beginner loose leaf transition in a setup close to existing mug + basket infuser.
Evidence: side-by-side or repeated one-variable test.
Change: repeat the same recipe on a second day.
Expected effect: a repeated result should be easier to trust.
Observed result: not tested on this exact setup yet.
Limitations: Water chemistry may change the result, so I would not generalize this to every city.

Professional experience
Direct recommendation: weigh the actual filled water once.
Applies to: basic black, green and oolong sampler / beginner loose leaf transition in a setup close to existing mug + basket infuser.
Evidence: firsthand experience with beginner loose leaf transition in a different vessel.
Change: weigh the actual filled water once.
Expected effect: your ratio will become comparable with other reports.
Observed result: not tested on this exact setup yet.
Limitations: I would stop if the change removes the aroma you are trying to preserve.
Commercial relationship: none.-

Comparable tea
Direct recommendation: repeat the same recipe on a second day.
Applies to: basic black, green and oolong sampler / beginner loose leaf transition in a setup close to existing mug + basket infuser.
Evidence: firsthand use of a comparable beginner loose leaf transition with similar parameters.
Change: repeat the same recipe on a second day.
Expected effect: a repeated result should be easier to trust.
Observed result: not tested on this exact setup yet.
Limitations: My result is from a small number of sessions, so treat it as evidence rather than law.
Commercial relationship: none.

I have no useful data, only solidarity with the part where one change creates three new questions.

My contribution is that basic black, green and oolong sampler sounds like a tea and also a minor railway station.

The phrase “actual filled capacity” has ruined at least two of my favorite excuses.

I’d be curious what the basket does with the first 30 seconds of the pour rather than the whole cup. That’s the bit I notice most when I swap from bags to loose leaf — the flavour can look “better” on paper but still feel flat if the leaves are cramped or the water hits them in a weird little blast. Have you tried the same tea with a more open basket and then just looked at how the wet leaf sits afterwards, not the liquor? I know that sounds a bit fussy, but it’s often the easiest clue before buying more stuff.
