i keep coming back to the king’s singers on old arvo pärt discs for this exact reason. the voices feel like they are in the same room with you, not some distant gold dome, and it lets the quiet lines do the work. also some medieval stuff by the rose ensemble has that same small lantern feeling

For something intimate I would look for a recording of early polyphony by the Hilliard Ensemble rather than a huge modern choir. The separate lines can remain audible, and the room feels like part of the composition instead of a grand wash placed behind it.

I like hearing the breath and the small uneven edges. They make the old music feel inhabited.

yes, this. if the choir sounds like it is trying to fill a cathedral and my kitchen sink, i usually back out

yeah, the desk is what makes it feel like somebody set the scene on purpose. not impossible to fake, just more effort than a glitch usually deserves

right, and metadata feels like the boring answer until it isn’t. old listing sites are full of mismatched images and half-fixed edits, then everybody starts seeing a mystery where there was just a sloppy upload. still creepy though
