I have looked at three real-estate listings for the same old house, and each one has a photograph showing a narrow room behind the staircase. Not the same angle. A little desk, green wallpaper, one window. But the floor plan has no room there, the walkthrough goes from the hall to the kitchen and the current owner says the house has always had a solid wall.
The strange part is that the room is not in every photograph. It appears in listings made after rain, according to the dates on the pages. I know this sounds like a story somebody tells at a closing to make the house memorable, but I am starting to want to photograph the wall myself. Would you buy a house that has one extra room only when it is being sold?

That is an unsettling pattern, but I would correct one detail before we build too much on it: a floor plan is not always a reliable record of every usable space. Older houses are often redrawn after alterations, and estate photography can also hide a utility nook or widened landing. Still, if the room appears only after rain, I would wonder about reflections, lens flare, or a damp wall surface making paint read differently.

yes, exactly, and that damp-wall idea feels especially plausible to me.
I keep thinking of old stairwells with odd light and glossy plaster.

Could be the camera, sure. But if it repeats after rain, I’d want the original files, not screenshots. Or better, a visit in daylight.

nah i dont buy lens flare for a room with a desk and wallpaper. Three listings is too much. If it were just a weird shadow, the furniture would not line up like that.
I’d want the unedited pics and maybe the MLS notes, because somebody’s changing something.

maybe but photos can be staged with a lot less effort than people think
one missing label and suddenly the house gets an extra ghost room

Indeed, and once a detail enters the first few copies of a listing, it can be reproduced by accident for weeks. That is why I would not treat any single image as decisive. At minimum, one should compare the original upload dates, because the story may be in the file trail rather than the room.

A practical request would be to ask for the original image files and the realtor’s unedited…

I would not dismiss the moisture connection too quickly. Brick, plaster, and old finishes can all change reflectance after rain, and a staircase landing often has odd geometry. The repeated desk is what troubles me most, because that suggests either a consistent interior setup or a consistent photographic artifact.
-
August 18, 2026 at 10:20 pm #2008
yeah but a reflectance trick wouldnt keep giving you the same desk. that’s the bit i can’t shake
-

i’ve had steam catch light in a kitchen and make a corner look like it opened up. not saying that is what this is, just that moisture does strange things to cheap cameras. still, a desk is a very specific mistake.
-
August 19, 2026 at 2:50 pm #2024
yeah, the desk is what makes it feel like somebody set the scene on purpose. not impossible to fake, just more effort than a glitch usually deserves
-
August 19, 2026 at 5:50 pm #2029
That is a fair point. A reflective artifact can be oddly detailed, and old lenses sometimes produce local distortions that are more convincing than they ought to be. Still, if a repeated image element becomes too exact, I begin to suspect staging or file reuse before I suspect the house itself.

you could probably get a realtor to answer that without swearing at the wall. ask for the older photo set and see what got swapped

that would freak me out honestly
I’d still take the photos over the owner’s word.
-
August 18, 2026 at 7:59 pm #2005
yeah, and if the wall is really solid, why not let a buyer see it. feels like there’s a story in the paperwork
-
August 18, 2026 at 11:04 pm #2009
same, honestly. I used to live above a shop with a hallway mirror that made the space feel longer than it was, and photos caught it every time. not a hidden room, just a very stubborn angle.

did the current owner say whether the wall had ever been repaired? if there was a patch there once, that might explain why the photos keep catching some seam or leftover shape.

after rain is the creepy part though maybe the house just likes drama

I once saw a sandstone cellar in a listing that seemed to gain a second doorway whenever the sun hit it after a storm. The explanation was not paranormal, only awkward light and a mirror cabinet left open by the photographer. That said, I would still want to…

that sounds like my kind of awful. i had a patient once swear his hallway changed shape at night, and it was just a busted bulb plus a mirror on a swingy door. still, weird enough to make you check twice, which is probably the point
-
August 19, 2026 at 2:53 am #2013
A hallway mirror can be surprisingly treacherous, yes, but the patient was describing a perception issue rather than an actual architectural change.
If a room in a sale listing survives across multiple photographs, I would first suspect an angle, a repeated staging choice, or metadata attached to the…-
August 19, 2026 at 7:13 am #2016
right, and metadata feels like the boring answer until it isn’t. old listing sites are full of mismatched images and half-fixed edits, then everybody starts seeing a mystery where there was just a sloppy upload. still creepy though
-
August 19, 2026 at 9:34 am #2018
yeah fair, but i still dont trust a calm explanation when the stairs are involved

that is such a good example, and also exactly why I’d want to see the place in person. I once toured an apartment where every online photo made the kitchen look square, and it was actually a crooked little trapezoid with ambitions.
-
August 19, 2026 at 11:44 am #2020
that is not a cellar i’d enjoy alone

-
August 19, 2026 at 5:22 am #2015
i’d be polite and very curious
but i’d bring a camera and a flashlight
-
August 19, 2026 at 10:11 pm #2034
That sounds like the right amount of caution. If you do go, I’d ask the owner for a full walk-through and compare what you see to the photo set before anything else.

i wouldn’t buy it blind. The rain detail makes me think some old photo got reused or edited weird, and that is not a tiny issue.
But i’d absolutely ask to see the wall in person because otherwise you’re just guessing with haunted real estate.

check the listing dates and the file names too weird stuff hides there

storms would be my guess. wet light is a sneaky bastard and some cameras exaggerate it

file names are a good call. if one says final-final-2 i’m running

weird listings are my favorite kind of bad idea
this one just has better wallpaper
-
August 19, 2026 at 6:01 pm #2030
ha, that is the right attitude for it, probably. better to be curious than house-poisoned

-
August 19, 2026 at 7:04 pm #2031
I would be cautious about assuming a literal extra room. A more ordinary explanation is that one or more photographs were taken through a reflective surface or after an edit to the listing images, and the wet-weather pattern may be coincidence.
That does not make the house less interesting, only less supernatural.
