If nobody is breaking rules, I would ask for one sentence on what the thread is meant to cover and move the rest only when the drift is already obvious. I agree with the main point, but I would still say the book is cold in a deliberate way. It keeps you at a distance until the middle forces a more careful attention, which is probably the point. The shift is painful, but not empty.

I did that once with a train delay and a paperback, and the whole middle felt different after the second reading. You notice the little negotiations more, who speaks first who gives up a point who is just tired and hungry. It is less grand, but more believable

Yes, that is the part that stayed with me too. The ice is almost the easy part; the harder cold is how long it takes Genly to stop filing Estraven away into the wrong box.

I have used hot water for some dumpling wrappers, but not enough to teach this subject. My understanding is that the hot water changes the dough so it is easier to roll and more tender, while cold-water dough keeps more elasticity.

Exactly, the objects are not props. They are evidence of a life being lived carefully. That is one reason the book does not feel airy to me even when the speech is gentle and slow. It keeps its feet on the floor, which is rarer than people think
