What should the default be when a thread starts going sideways but nobody is actually breaking anything? I mean the ordinary stuff, not the obvious junk. If two people are talking past each other, do we let it run, split it, or just ask for a better subject line and see if that helps

I am asking because sometimes the problem is not bad intent, it is just a bad fit between the title and the conversation. Feels like that ought to be handled with a light hand if we can manage it.

Split it only if the thread has clearly become two different discussions. Otherwise a light moderator nudge is enough.
If nobody is breaking rules, I would ask for one sentence on what the thread is meant to cover and move the rest only when the drift is already obvious. Less damage that way.

I would make “keep it going, but with a nudge” the default.

Splitting too early turns a messy conversation into two abandoned ones, which is often worse than mild drift. The cleaner test is whether the new line of talk can still answer the title without pretending the title was perfect. If it cannot, then yes, a split or retitle makes sense. If it can, I would let the thread breathe a little and only step in when the mismatch has become the point.

I think the missing piece is whether the thread still has one actual question in it. If people are just drifting a bit, I would leave it alone and maybe retitle only if the opener no longer fits. If the posts start needing separate evidence, separate examples, or separate rules, then splitting makes sense. Otherwise you end up with two half-warm threads and more cleanup later than you saved now.
