This is a good example of why the exact revision and test history matter. “My ECM Classika PID 2024 is bad” produces twenty theories; the measurements above at least give the theories somewhere to die.

Short answer: Start with the simple reproducible test before buying parts.
Applies to which model/revision: ECM Classika PID 2024.
Likely cause: The symptom points first to a setup, wear-part or calibration issue that can be separated from a major failure.
Test to perform next: Return one variable to a known reference, repeat twice, and record whether the symptom changes in the same direction.
Expected result: If that subsystem is the cause, the symptom should change predictably rather than randomly.
Safety limit: Stop if mains voltage, exposed wiring, a pressurized hot boiler, repeated GFCI trips or an unknown leak path is involved. Unplug, cool fully and use qualified service.
Evidence: First-hand owner experience with the same model/configuration; not a manufacturer diagnosis.

Confirmed solution: The fault was isolated with the case still safe to inspect, the failed wear component was replaced, and the machine passed repeated heat/pressure cycles afterward. I am leaving the original numbers above intact so the next person can see what changed.

            Controlled test
Direct recommendation: repeat the same recipe on a second day.
Applies to: Blue Shade 2026 kabusecha / Japanese green tea in a setup close to 500 ml glass bottle.
Evidence: side-by-side or repeated one-variable test.
Change: repeat the same recipe on a second day.
Expected effect: a repeated result should be easier to trust.
Observed result: not tested on this exact setup yet.
Limitations: Water chemistry may change the result, so I would not generalize this to every city.
            Commercial relationship: none.

I understood all of this until the third pour and then spiritually became instant coffee.

The useful documented check is the revision-specific maintenance/service sequence, not a generic espresso-machine video. For Breville Barista Express BES870, verify the manual procedure and part number before opening or ordering anything. If the documented test does not reproduce the fault, stop treating that subsystem as proven.

One variable only: change only the filter paper. Why: the present agitation can be creating fines migration and choking the bed. Expected result: similar total time but less stalling near the end. I would not buy anything until that test gives you a direction.

This is exactly the kind of note I want in a forum: date, setup, what changed, and what happened. Future searchers can do something with it.

Please say roast date when you post a roaster review. ‘Fresh’ has become an adjective with no legal guardian.

Also in Sweden, but my order was a few months ago, so treat this as older evidence. Shipping was fine and the coffee opened up after about two weeks. I would still want a newer report before subscribing. Hope that helps.

I rather like your accountant image, though perhaps a kinder accountant. The comparison begins to fail if one imagines the tala as a prison; it is closer to a recurring frame that the player can lean into or dance around.

That is not quite the same as saying…

Yes, that is the useful point. In a good performance the breath and the boundary can coincide, and then the listener stops thinking about technique at all.

That is when the room gets quiet in a good way

That is exactly the sort of distinction I was trying to make in my own clumsy way. A map is useful because it shows routes and dead ends, not because it tells you how the journey feels.

Old books do this too, now that I think of it

That is a sensible note taking habit. I would add the drone too, because it can make the same phrases feel anchored or restless depending on how the performer leans against it.

A little thing, but it changes the room
