        Grinder / burrs / setting / calibration: Built-in conical burr grinder; factory conical burr set; external 5, internal burr 6; burr carrier reseated.
        Basket / portafilter: 18–20 g VST-style precision basket; stock portafilter with double spout (54 mm system where applicable).
        Bean / roast date: Honduras Marcala medium roast; roast date 2026-07-20.
        Dose / yield / extraction time: 18.0 g in, 40 g out, 31 s target/current reference.
        Water / temperature: bottled low-mineral water, about 55 ppm TDS; 93°C.
        Exact symptom: The built-in grinder needs an unusually fine external setting for the same beans.
        Tests already performed: Clean and reseat the upper burr, confirm internal setting, then redial with fresh beans Already cleaned the obvious removable parts and repeated the test once.
        Diagnostic photograph or video: photo of the machine label/revision plus a short symptom clip.

        This feels like one of those cases where the machine is technically obeying me and practically mocking me. The built-in grinder needs an unusually fine external setting for the same beans.

          Confirmed solution: I rechecked the grinder zero, reseated the upper burr, moved finer from the new true zero, and the shot returned to a normal flow. I am leaving the original numbers above intact so the next person can see what changed.

                  This is a good example of why the exact revision and test history matter. “My Breville Barista Express BES870 is bad” produces twenty theories; the measurements above at least give the theories somewhere to die.

                  Inference only: because the symptom is repeatable and your listed tests already rule out some obvious causes, I would suspect the narrowest remaining mechanical/setup path before a board-level failure. I would not buy a part from that inference alone.

                  The useful documented check is the revision-specific maintenance/service sequence, not a generic espresso-machine video. For Breville Barista Express BES870, verify the manual procedure and part number before opening or ordering anything. If the documented test does not reproduce the fault, stop treating that subsystem as proven.

                    Not the exact revision, but I had a closely related setup with the same general failure mode. The thing that saved time was separating the Built-in conical burr grinder / puck-prep side from the machine side instead of adjusting both together. Similar experience, not proof for your unit.

                          I would mark the part you changed and photograph the original position before going farther. Future you is an unreliable witness.

                            One small follow-up: repeat the test from a cold start once. Heat can hide or create a fault, and “it worked five minutes later” is useful information.
