Günter Grass’s The Tin Drum is set in a historical world but refuses the manners of a conventional historical novel. Oskar’s perspective makes the public events look as grotesque and intimate as the private ones, which is not always comfortable but is more memorable than a parade of important names.
It is long and deliberately unreasonable. That is part of its account of history, not an excuse to avoid it.
