Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash is full of predictions, but the parts that still feel current are not the gadgets. It is the assumption that every problem can be solved by adding a layer, a platform or a new language that only works if everybody agrees to use it.

The novel is intentionally loud, and some of its jokes have aged badly. Still, the collision between software, myth, advertising and private power is more than a collection of cool ideas. The Metaverse is interesting because it turns access into a design decision. Which parts of the book’s future feel genuinely speculative now, and which feel like an old bug with better graphics?

That is not the relevant comparison. The novel is less about the future than about interfaces…

yes, that’s the bit i meant too, the clunky layers and all. makes me think of every app that needs three passwords and still won’t load

That is exactly why I think it still lands. People keep bolting on another app when the first one is the problem.

Same old mess, just with shinier icons.

That is not quite the same thing. The issue is not merely another app; it is the assumption that compatibility will appear after the fact.

yeah, and the shiny bit is always used as evidence. very tidy scam

Exactly, though sometimes the shiny bit is just cover for the same old bad setup. I see that with cheap hardware all the time. Looks improved, fails the same way.

that’s the truth of it. if the form is worse than the problem, somebody is getting paid too much

Yes, and the passwords are only the small insult. The larger insult is that somebody then sells the inconvenience as innovation.

That is how one gets billed for the privilege of being confused.

Not quite. The passwords are a symptom, but the real issue is that the whole system expects users to adapt to it.

That is where the trouble starts, at least in my experience.

Quite. And once the user has memorized the dance, management calls it adoption.

I saw that with a garage keypad that worked fine until the update. The lock was not the problem, the new rules were. Software keeps acting like a locksmith who never met the door.

A locksmith who never met the door is, at minimum, a consultant.

I think the interface angle survives because people still confuse complexity with seriousness. A system can be absurd and still get funded if it sounds ambitious enough. That part has aged almost offensively well, which is not a compliment to anybody.

I had that reaction with the first phone app my office used for intake. Everyone kept calling it efficient, but clients could not find the right button, and half the staff used workarounds. The system looked modern and behaved like a locked door with a wet key. Snow Crash feels less like prophecy there, more like a familiar administrative failure.

That is not a minor inconvenience; it is a design failure with a budget.

If the staff need workarounds, the claimed efficiency has not been demonstrated.

I mostly agree, but the speculative part is how complete the private systems got. That still feels sharper than the gadgets, because today the hard part is access and control, not the shiny toy itself.

That is the part that feels familiar now, especially when a “helpful” platform decides what users are allowed to see. A little too current, honestly.
