I think the nastiest thing Miéville does is make the boundary feel bureaucratic instead of mystical — like there is no grand reveal waiting behind it, just paperwork, routine, and people acting as if the split has always been obvious. That’s what makes it stick for me. The book is not saying “here is the secret mechanism,” it is saying “here is what a society does when it turns a fiction into procedure and then into common sense.” Which is honestly more frightening. Once a rule gets that ordinary, who even has to believe in it anymore?

I tested one change from the opening post and it moved the cup, but did not finish the job. Next variable: grind one small step coarser. Why: the last part of the brew may be adding dryness without useful sweetness. Expected result: similar total time but less stalling near the end.
