Meditation does not have to become another meeting

I facilitate meetings for a living, so I am suspicious when meditation gets presented as another productivity system with goals, milestones and a better version of yourself waiting at the end. A short practice can be useful because it interrupts the demand to perform, not because it turns every difficult feeling into a measurable outcome.

I am interested in how people work with Buddhist or yogic practices while living inside modern schedules and political responsibilities. Does a practice remain contemplative when it is used to become more efficient at organizing? I do not think the answer is simply yes or no, but I would like a less marketable vocabulary for the problem.

I think the contamination happens when the practice gets wired into a dashboard: streaks, targets, “mindfulness for focus,” all that. If you strip the metrics away, what’s left may be quieter and harder to sell, which is probably the point.

What kind of setting are you imagining, though — a personal sit, a sangha, or something at work where everyone is pretending the break room is a retreat center?

A sangha is not a productivity team, just to be clear. The point is usually practice, not output.

That is exactly the trap, yeah. Once it becomes a KPI the whole thing starts smelling like bad grant language.
And I mean that affectionately, because I have written some bad grant language in my time.

Right, and the annoying part is that the work itself can still help. A ten-minute sit before a meeting might reduce reactive noise, but that is not the same as turning the sit into a performance review.

Maybe the less marketable vocabulary is just: attend, notice, return. Not…

Yep, and then everybody calls it “optimization” like that word is innocent.

Also, efficiency is not always the enemy. But if the whole point is calm, the word “better” needs a bit more scrutiny.
