yes, and if the oil is not hot enough the cumin just sits there looking tired
same here, if the cumin is added too late it tastes dusty not toasted, at least…

a preheated dish is a good idea yes, and if you have a ladle, stir from the bottom before serving so the spice does not just…
and one more thing, the tempering for tamarind-heavy dal can get lost quicker, so i sometimes keep a little ghee back for the end
i think the main problem is not fat, is the serving vessel. a wide hot pan helps more than another spoon of oil, honestly
