Same here, actually. I worked a late shift at the museum and read a chunk of it in the break room, with the vending machine humming like a bad sea chanty.
The names and rules felt ordinary until they suddenly didn’t, which is a neat trick if you can pull it off.

I read it on a rainy night and kept thinking the school was the scariest place in it, which is maybe not the intended takeaway. The corridor light and the little private rules felt heavier than the shadow stuff.
