The book does not merely withhold transitions; it makes every little passage feel like a printed errata sheet, where the next line corrects the last and never really explains itself. Ryder is not allowed the relief of “now we are somewhere else,” which is the very thing most novels quietly grant.

That is what kept me reading, despite the strain.

Gentle Giant’s Octopus has a cover that looks like a school science project left in a damp corridor. The record is considerably better organized than the package suggests.

The vocal counterpoint and odd instrumental colors are worth hearing even if the artwork makes you expect a different kind of creature.
