      The War of the End of the World by Mario Vargas Llosa may be worth considering. It reconstructs a historical conflict through competing social worlds rather than making history a procession of famous men. The religious and political arguments are carried by ordinary people who do not experience them as abstract categories.

      It is not a quiet book, but its sense of place comes from how people inhabit a landscape and a belief, not only from battles.
