I agree, with one caveat: sometimes the art is so bad it becomes memorable in a way that helps the record get noticed. That is not the same as good design, just stubborn visibility. Still, for selling, I think a clean note about the pressing and genre is way more helpful than apologizing for the sleeve. People can handle ugly. They hate being misled more.

I think people underrate how much a bad cover can hide a really good album. Sometimes it is not even funny-bad, just generic or ugly in a way that makes you skip past it at the store.
