One towel becomes a social agreement nobody remembers making, and then everybody pretends the agreement was reasonable.I think the joke lands because it is true. Once a cloth becomes a catch-all, no one wants to be the one who asks where it started.
I’m not sure memory is the main issue so much as speed. If the towel location is physically different, people do the right thing before the brain gets involved. In bars, that’s often the whole game.
