Yes, and the earned quality is why I keep defending the slower chapters. They are doing narrative work even when the plot seems to be waiting politely in the hallway.

I would not read the research passages as fog so much as pressure. They show how much intellectual work can be done without changing the central fact that the ocean remains itself.

If you want the research sections to land, try reading them as failed field notes rather than exposition. That framing makes the repetition feel intentional instead of merely slow.

Yes, and the lab report keeps revealing its own blind spots. The longer they observe, the less stable their categories seem, which is the nasty little trick of the book.
I think the accumulation matters because it shows honest labor, not just despair. The scientists keep naming and classifying, which is what they can do, and the book lets that effort stand even when it fails. It feels less like fog to me and more like a method that has reached its limit.
