September 10, 2026 at 11:38 am #5062Brewer and filter: Clever Dripper large; Melitta #4 paper
Grinder, burr and calibration: Comandante C40 MK4; Nitro Blade; 24 clicks
Bean, roaster, process and roast date: Ethiopia Chelbesa; Tim Wendelboe; washed; roast date 2026-09-03
Dose and water mass: 16.0 g coffee; 256 g water
Temperature and water profile: 92°C; Brita-filtered tap water, about 110 ppm TDS
Pour/agitation schedule: 60 g bloom for 45 s, then pulse pours roughly every 30 s to 256 g
Drawdown time: 3:05
Expected and perceived flavour: expected berry sweetness; perceived cup is sharp at first and hollow as it cools
Changes already tested: changed filter paper and repeated the same recipeThis is one of those purchases where every extra fifty dollars somehow becomes ‘obvious.’ I would like the version of the advice that remembers rent exists.

That tracks with my experience. The useful part is that you wrote down what stayed fixed, so somebody else can actually test it.

This is exactly the kind of note I want in a forum: date, setup, what changed, and what happened. Future searchers can do something with it.

The cleanup detail matters more than reviews admit. A tool used every day gets judged in the sink as much as in the cup.

I am less convinced by the flavour claim than the workflow claim, but that may be because my water is different.

I support this experiment mainly because it does not require buying another shiny cylinder.

If the cup is sharp at first and then hollow, I would not first buy a new grinder. I would try a little finer and maybe a longer bloom, just a small change one at a time. Sometimes the coffee is not broken, it is only asking for patience like dough that needs more rest

i keep staring at the water number more than the grinder tbh
110 ppm with a washed Ethiopia can get kinda weird and sharp for me, like the cup has bones but not enough padding? maybe a tiny water swap is cheaper than a whole upgrade, even just mixing in some softer water if you can. also 24 clicks on a C40 feels a little safer than wild, but if it hollows out as it cools i’d test one notch finer before buying anything lol

i keep getting stuck on the hollow-as-it-cools part…
if it is sharp early, maybe the cup is still a bit too fast, not only the grinder. a slightly longer steep in the clever can help without buying anything, i think. and if you have another paper brand around, the thickness can change the first taste too, kinda annoying haha

I keep hearing one more small thing in your notes: the cup sounds a touch bright at the start and then a little thin in the middle, which to my ear can happen when the extraction is a bit uneven rather than simply underdone. If I were staying within rent-money limits, I’d try the same dose but pour a little less aggressively, almost like keeping the rhythm steadier and letting the bed settle before the next pulse
Sometimes the fix is not another instrument, just a steadier touch on the one already on the stand.

I think the rent-friendly answer may be even less glamorous than a grinder change: try the same coffee with slightly cooler water, perhaps 88 or 89°C, and see whether the sharp first impression softens without taking the berry notes away.
I have often been surprised by how much a few degrees can do, and it costs nothing, which is my favourite sort of equipment.

One small thing I do not see mentioned yet is the paper-to-dose ratio. A large Clever with 16 g can leave a pretty modest bed depth, and that sometimes makes the early cup taste sharper than it ought to, even when the recipe looks sensible on paper. If you have a cheap way to test it, I would try a slightly larger dose before buying hardware; not because bigger is always better, but because sometimes the cheapest fix is simply giving the water more coffee to sit with.

One cheap test: keep everything same and pour more gently, maybe with a slightly longer pause before the last pulse. Sharp at start and hollow later can happen when the bed gets disturbed too much, not only when grind is wrong.
If that does nothing, then I would look at water before I look at another tool. Water is the hidden fee, always.
