The drone changes what harmony means before the melody begins

As a classical guitarist, I am trained to hear a chord as a kind of container for a melody. Listening seriously to khayal keeps undoing that habit for me. The tanpura is not giving the piece a sequence of chords to travel through; it makes the pitch center feel physically present before the singer has done anything.

I do not mean that Indian classical music has no harmony, or that a raga is just a scale. I mean that my first question changes from “where is this progression going?” to “what is this note doing against the drone right now?” The same phrase can feel newly colored when the emphasis and return are different. I would be interested in how other instrumentalists learned to stop hearing everything through their original harmonic training.

Yeah, that makes sense. A drone is like the engine idling under the hood, you dont start with the road trip, you listen for the vibration first.
That part seems almost rude to a guitar brain, like, hey buddy no chord changes for you today, just sit there and feel the pressure.

yeah and once you hear it that way you cant unhear it. I tried listening with a tanpura drone while folding shirts and it made one note feel huge, like it was standing in a spotlight instead of being part of a run. kinda weird, kind of nice

Tanpura. Not a drone app on a phone, the real thing. But yeah, same idea, just less convenient and way more honest.

try putting the drone on real low and singing one note over it, then move half a step around it. It makes the pull super obvious, and if you can hum along, that helps too, no theory homework required
