Tango for people who are not ready to suffer professionally

I drive at night, so I have enough time for music to become a second passenger. I want some tango with movement and character, but not three hours of everybody dying in the rain.

Piazzolla is welcome, also older recordings if the sound is not completely made of dust. What do you return to?

Piazzolla is not always only the rain and tragedy, that part gets repeated too much. Try “Libertango” or “Oblivion” first, they move without dragging the room down.

Also some older orchestra sides still sound fine if the transfer is decent, so do not fear the dust so quickly.

I’d rather hear a hiss than a remix that smears the strings into wallpaper.

yes, that is what I meant. If the melody is clear, a little hiss is only like old cloth with a good seam, not a hole.

Then look for clean transfers of D’Arienzo and Di Sarli, not the museum-grade misery. You can drive to those without feeling like you owe the neighbors a funeral.

And if you want one sharp edge in the mix, throw in Troilo later.

That’s fair, though Troilo can still throw a sad shirt on the chair and leave it there all night, which is very tango of him. If I want road energy I reach for D’Arienzo first, then let Troilo in once the highway gets boring and the coffee’s gone cold.

No, I like Troilo for this more than D’Arienzo. D’Arienzo runs too much sometimes, Troilo keeps the weight without making the road feel nervous.

Maybe that is only me, but the car needs one steady back seat, not five people arguing at once.

I used D’Arienzo on a night transfer once, kept me from getting sleepy at 2 a.m.

The horns do the job, and nobody sounds like they are waiting for a train that already left.

I disagree a little, because even the sad stuff can be a great road record if the pulse is there. The trick is not to buy the ultra-dramatic compilations, those sell misery like it is craft beer.

If you want movement without doom, I’d start with D’Arienzo and Di Sarli, then add one or two Piazzolla tracks. The contrast helps, and you can see what kind of night you’re in.

I’d push back a little on Di Sarli before D’Arienzo if the goal is staying awake, because Di Sarli can turn into a velvet couch real fast. Great music, sure. But a long drive and a velvet couch is how you end up missing your exit, and that is not a romantic tragedy, just irritating.

For one concrete thing, try “La Cumparsita” in a few different recordings and see which age works for you.

I did that with an old LP once, kept swapping copies till one finally sounded like somebody opened a window.
Funny how a familiar tune can turn into a brand new room.

Then maybe one sad one, if it earns its place.

I’d make a tiny starter playlist: one D’Arienzo, one Troilo, one Piazzolla. Then you’ll know if you want more feet or more smoke.

I agree, but with one caveat: some Piazzolla recordings are more dramatic than you asked for. Start with the sharper, cleaner ones, not the ones that feel like a cigarette ad in a storm.
