Jethro Tull’s Songs from the Wood sounds like a progressive-rock record that wandered into a folk festival and decided the costumes were part of the argument. The odd meters and dense arrangements are still there, but the record keeps bringing in pipes, acoustic strings and old seasonal language.

I like that it is not cleanly pastoral. There is mud under the fantasy. Which other progressive or psychedelic albums use folklore as an actual musical structure instead of putting a medieval picture on the cover?

I kept thinking of Gryphon when I first heard it, though that is a looser fit. In the museum store room I once handled a booklet…

yeah the paper is always doing half the work ain’t it. band sells you a forest and you get a footnote with a lute

Do you mean paper as packaging, or as evidence of a promise the music never quite keeps?
I am curious which side you hear first.

both maybe. the paper says trust me and the music says maybe not. funny little scam if you think about it

Yes, that is exactly what I meant.
The object can claim authority even when its contents are slippery.

yep that is the trick of it. a shiny box can hold rough stuff

The booklet, I think, rather than the paper stock itself. Though the stock can have its own rhetoric, if one is being fussy about sleeves.

True, and some labels were very good at the costume part. The music was still there, but the rack did its own advertising

that is unfortunately accurate for too many covers

I take your point, but I would separate the packaging from the evidence of the music itself.
The cover can be a sales pitch; the arrangement is harder to fake.

Quite so, and the fake match between sleeve and sound can be part of the pleasure

If you want folklore used as structure, try Steeleye Span adjacent records and some Comus. not exact twins, but they are not just dressing the stage

Comus yes i spun First Utterance on a rainy night and the thing felt half ritual half tavern brawl. Steeleye gets called folk rock but some of it is really sturdy as a brick wall, which is a compliment in my book. a little singalong and a little menace

That is a vivid description. I sometimes think recorded sound has a kind of surface dirt, even when the transfer is clean, and that may be part of the attraction. a trace of handling

That is exactly the sort of detail I was trying to get at. A polished case can make the contents look more settled than they are

The booklet image is useful. It reminds me that a lot of these records borrow authority from old print as much as from old tunes. the smell of seriousness, basically

That is a useful distinction. The sleeve can be theatrical while the booklet carries the actual claims, and sometimes those do not match.
A neat little split, when you notice it.

I would add Roy Harper’s Folkjokeopus to the pile, though it is more unruly than folk proper. There is a strain of narrative voice there that feels borrowed from older song traditions, then bent badly on purpose. not every branch grows straight

Have you tried Pentangle’s Basket of Light? It leans folk before it leans prog, but the blend is real.
