I would like to put in one of our five-person requests for a Classical Indian Music forum.
There are already enough of us circling the subject from different directions: listeners, people with some background, people who are simply curious, and at least a few of us capable of disagreeing over a recording for longer than is medically advisable.
My preference would be to keep it broad at first: Hindustani and Carnatic music, recordings, concerts, instruments, listening questions, history, and performance practice where somebody actually knows what they are talking about.
If four other people would genuinely use it, say so. I am trying to obey the new democracy before it develops procedures.

Count me as one of the five.

I’d definitely read a room devoted to this. I would avoid a separate ‘spiritual music’ label. That would get muddy fast.

This has my vote. a separate forum makes sense to me. I suspect the interesting arguments will be about interpretation rather than basic recommendations.

I don’t know enough to lead conversations there, but I would follow them. Keeping it specifically classical would help; otherwise it becomes a general India-and-music bucket.

Good, that sounds like enough actual interest to justify the room. I would keep the first version broad and let the threads tell us what needs separating.

This deserves its own room rather than being buried in general music.

That is the part I agree with. I’d be happy to see this added. I want somewhere that permits both deep technical discussion and the occasional ‘what am I hearing here?’ question.

Yes, especially that point. Please make it broad enough for curious beginners. I’d rather see Hindustani and Carnatic music share the room at first than split things too early

I’d vote for the forum. Maybe call it exactly what it is: Classical Indian Music. No clever title required.

Right, and I’d add one thing. I can think of several discussions that would fit there. Please don’t make people prove they know ten names before asking where to start.

That sounds about right to me. Yes, especially if recordings can be discussed without turning every thread into a contest.

i’d lurk more than post, but that still counts as demand in my book. Recordings, concerts, instruments and listening questions all seem like a natural fit

Yes, I think this would help. i’m interested even if I mostly know the music from listening rather than practice. A pinned beginner thread could stop the same three questions from multiplying forever.

Make it and I suspect people will find uses we haven’t thought of yet. If the threshold is five, this one appears to have crossed the border without paperwork.

That is the part I agree with. Count me as one of the five. Please let people ask what they are actually hearing without requiring a vocabulary exam first.

That sounds about right to me. I’d use it for recommendations and listening questions. The useful part for me would be recommendations with a little explanation of what to listen for.

This deserves its own room rather than being buried in general music. I’d appreciate threads comparing recordings, provided we don’t turn them into rankings.

That is the part I agree with. I’d be happy to see this added. I want somewhere that permits both deep technical discussion and the occasional ‘what am I hearing here?’ question. The name is clear and searchable, which is more than can be said for half the internet.

That makes five. Apparently the constitutional machinery works. I’d still keep the room broad at first and let actual use tell us whether anything needs splitting.

I agree on the literal name. Searchable beats clever here.

That is the part I agree with. I’d like somewhere to ask basic questions without hijacking every music thread. The useful part for me would be recommendations with a little explanation of what to listen for.

Yes, especially that point. Good request. One room is enough for now. If it somehow becomes enormous, future us can suffer later.

Right, and I’d add one thing. I would read that forum regularly. I hope knowledgeable people can correct beginners without making the correction into a public execution.
