        Grinder / burrs / setting / calibration: DF54; stock 54 mm flat burrs; 18 marks from burr touch; zero checked after cleaning.
        Basket / portafilter: 18 g IMS precision basket; stock spouted portafilter (54 mm system where applicable).
        Bean / roast date: Ethiopia Sidama medium roast; roast date 2026-08-05.
        Dose / yield / extraction time: 18.0 g in, 36 g out, 28 s target/current reference.
        Water / temperature: filtered tap, about 80 ppm hardness; 92°C.
        Exact symptom: Trying to set a safe descale interval without overusing acid on moderately hard water.
        Tests already performed: Measure source water hardness and log machine volume before deciding frequency Already cleaned the obvious removable parts and repeated the test once.
        Diagnostic photograph or video: close-up of the basket/puck plus a short flow video.

        I am looking for revision-specific experience here. “It probably fits” is how my drawer became a museum of almost-correct espresso parts.

          Confirmed solution: I checked the exact revision and water/part specification, followed the manufacturer-compatible procedure, then flushed and verified normal taste/operation before changing anything else. I am leaving the original numbers above intact so the next person can see what changed.

              Likely cause: The symptom points first to a setup, wear-part or calibration issue that can be separated from a major failure.
              Test to perform next: Return one variable to a known reference, repeat twice, and record whether the symptom changes in the same direction.

                  Not the exact revision, but I had a closely related setup with the same general failure mode. The thing that saved time was separating the DF54 / puck-prep side from the machine side instead of adjusting both together. Similar experience, not proof for your unit.

                The useful documented check is the revision-specific maintenance/service sequence, not a generic espresso-machine video. For Breville Bambino Plus BES500, verify the manual procedure and part number before opening or ordering anything. If the documented test does not reproduce the fault, stop treating that subsystem as proven.

                    This is a good example of why the exact revision and test history matter. “My Breville Bambino Plus BES500 is bad” produces twenty theories; the measurements above at least give the theories somewhere to die.

                    Inference only: because the symptom is repeatable and your listed tests already rule out some obvious causes, I would suspect the narrowest remaining mechanical/setup path before a board-level failure. I would not buy a part from that inference alone.
