Machine / revision: Breville Bambino Plus BES500
        Country / voltage: Australia / 230V
Grinder / burrs / setting / calibration: 1Zpresso J-Ultra / DF54; stock 54 mm flat burrs; 12 marks from burr touch; zero checked after cleaning.
Basket / portafilter: stock double basket with paper filter; stock spouted portafilter (54 mm system where applicable).
Bean / roast date: Brazil Cerrado medium roast; roast date 2026-07-12.
        Dose / yield / extraction time: 18.0 g in, 36 g out, 28 s target/current reference.
Water / temperature: filtered tap, about 80 ppm hardness; 92°C.
Exact symptom: I am deciding whether this grinder is a sensible match for the machine and roast/workflow rather than just technically capable.
Tests already performed: Compared dose workflow, noise, retention, adjustment style, local price and the current grinder’s limits.
Diagnostic photograph or video: photo of the grinder setting and a short shot video.

The Breville Bambino Plus BES500 is staying. The question is whether the 1Zpresso J-Ultra / DF54 is a sensible partner or the start of another completely unnecessary upgrade chain.

I used a cheaper grinder first and the upgrade was obvious mostly in repeatability. The machine did not magically become better; I just stopped fighting yesterday’s setting.

If you mostly drink medium-dark espresso, do not let light-roast internet turn the grinder choice into a laboratory grant.
