Aqualung is prog rock arguing with a dirty boot

Jethro Tull’s Aqualung gets called a prog record, a hard-rock record and a concept album depending on who is trying to win the argument. I mostly hear a band making long-form songs out of riffs, flute, church language and people who are not behaving well.

The title track is obvious, but the record gets stranger when it moves between social observation and sermon. I like that the flute is not there to make the band tasteful. It is another sharp object. What do people hear as the record’s center: the lyrics, the guitar, or the way the arrangements keep changing the speaker?

Small correction the flute is not just a sharp object here it is more like the thing cutting across the whole mess. The record still feels like hard rock to me first because the guitars and drums keep the boots on the ground. Prog maybe but not the kind that floats away from the dirt

I get the joke, but I do not think the flute is bossy so much as it is the thing telling you the song is changing shape. On this record the lyrics matter, sure, but the arrangement does a lot of the work. If you only listen for message you miss how the dynamics move like a dog switching from sniffing to guarding.

Agreed mostly, and the dirty part matters. If the guitars were any cleaner it would lose the whole scrap yard feel right out

I would tweak one thing there the record is not really a sermon album. It borrows church language and image all over the place

but the bite is usually social more than holy. The center for me is that they keep changing the frame while the riff keeps…
