Before we need moderators to make difficult decisions, could we agree on what we expect them to moderate?
The opening post is clear about insults and basic conduct. I would prefer not to grow that into a document nobody reads. At the same time, “be decent” becomes less simple when two people are arguing hard, someone is being persistently unpleasant without quite insulting anybody, or a thread turns into a grievance imported from somewhere else.
My instinct is that opinions should get a very wide berth and behavior a narrower one. Threats, harassment, spam and personal attacks are easy cases. The difficult part is everything just below them.
What would you actually want a moderator to step in for, and what would you rather we simply tolerate?

I’d rather define this while everybody is calm than after the first ugly argument.

Light moderation sounds right, but ‘light’ needs a shape. Thread locking should be rare and temporary when possible

Yes, though the title should not promise more than the forum can hold. the opening rule already covers most of what matters. If someone starts posting the same accusation in five places, that is no longer one disagreement.

I don’t want a giant code of conduct. Personal attacks, threats, spam and deliberate harassment seem like the obvious hard line.

This is close to my own preference. I would rather write three rules people remember than twelve rules people learn only after breaking them.

A short list would be better than a constitution.

The moderators should intervene in conduct, not taste. No secret rules.

Right, and I’d add one thing. I’d keep the threshold for deletion high. If two people are arguing hard but still answering each other, I would leave them alone.

That sounds about right to me. I like the idea of warnings before punishment when possible.

spam and threats are easy; the gray area is people being persistently awful without using obvious insults. I’d prefer escalating steps: reminder, warning, short cooling-off period, then stronger action if somebody insists

That is the part I agree with. Please don’t make sarcasm itself illegal. A bad mood should not become a permanent criminal record.

Yes, especially that point. I’d rather tolerate some mess than make everyone write like customer support. Deleting content should be the last tool, not the first.

No problem with that. moderation should be visible enough that nobody has to guess why something vanished.

I would rather see one consistent rule than twelve exceptions. Moderation should protect participation, not protect anybody from being disagreed with

that is the part I agree with. I’d rather define this while everybody is calm than after the first ugly argument. Repeatedly dragging unrelated grudges into new threads should count as behavior, not ‘just debate’.

That sounds about right to me. We probably need fewer rules than people think. Moderators should not have to adjudicate whether a joke was funny, only whether somebody is using it as a club.

A short list would be better than a constitution. People should be able to criticize moderators in public, provided they do it under the same conduct rules.

Yes, especially that point. Disagreement should be ordinary here. I’d keep political or religious disagreement legal unless the conversation becomes personal abuse.

Yes, though the title should not promise more than the forum can hold. the moderators should intervene in conduct, not taste. No secret rules. If a behavior gets somebody sanctioned, the rest of us should be able to understand the rule.

Right, and I’d add one thing. A moderator should be allowed to say ‘take a day off’ without convening parliament. I’d keep political or religious disagreement legal unless the conversation becomes personal abuse.

Moderation should be visible enough that nobody has to guess why something vanished. If a post is removed, a short public reason would prevent mythology from growing around it.
