I am asking this before we develop the traditional forum disease where somebody asks about a book and thirty replies later two people are discussing lentils.
I like thread drift. Half the reason I like forums is that conversations behave like conversations instead of filing cabinets. But there is obviously a point where a useful side discussion becomes impossible to find because it is living under a title about something else.
So where is that point for us?
My vote is for a generous leash. Jokes, small detours, personal stories, all fine. If a side subject turns into an actual sustained discussion, maybe split it into a new topic and leave links in both places. No scolding, no pretending anyone has committed a filing offense.
Thoughts?

I like tangents, but there is a point where the original question disappears.

I’d rather let conversation breathe than police every side remark. New topics created from a tangent should quote enough context that they do not begin mid-sentence

This seems dangerously sensible. some of the best parts of forums are accidental. Maybe use ‘continue here’ links instead of scolding people.

We need a way to preserve useful detours without making search impossible. Maybe ten or fifteen substantial replies on the new subject is a reasonable signal, not a hard rule.

Yes, that is basically my instinct too. If the detour becomes useful enough that someone might want to find it next week, that is when splitting starts to make sense

A little drift makes people feel like people.

That is the part I agree with. The question for me is whether the original poster can still get an answer. If the software makes splitting ugly, tolerate more drift rather than produce administrative debris.

Yes, especially that point. I’d tolerate a lot before moving anything. A moderator can split the tangent and leave a link in both directions, so nobody loses context.

Thread drift is only a problem when the new subject starts generating its own discussion. I’d rather see members self-split than wait for a moderator.

I think the first person who notices a tangent can simply start a new topic and link it. Short jokes and personal asides should stay where they happened.

That is the part I agree with. Moving posts should be about navigation, not punishment. Do not split two people having three friendly replies. That is conversation, not structural failure.

Yes, especially that point. If everybody in the thread happily follows the detour, I don’t see an emergency. A split thread should keep the original timestamps and authors if possible.

For me, yes. the title should still roughly describe what a reader is going to find. If the original poster asks people to bring it back, that should carry weight.

Right, and I’d add one thing. I’d split only when the side discussion becomes useful enough to deserve being found later.

That sounds about right to me. Some threads are conversations; some are reference material. Treating them identically seems odd. Searchability is the only reason I care. I do not need conversational purity.

I vote for a generous leash. Let the OP request a split, but don’t make them responsible for housekeeping.

that is the part I agree with. I like tangents, but there is a point where the original question disappears. The worst outcome would be silently moving half a conversation and making everybody look confused.

That sounds about right to me. I don’t want moderators splitting a thread every time somebody mentions lunch. Technical answers benefit from cleaner threads more than purely social topics do.

A little drift makes people feel like people. If the side subject becomes the reason new people are joining the thread, it has probably become a topic.

Right, and I’d add one thing. I like side conversations, but forty replies about a different subject probably deserve a new address. Sometimes the tangent is the actual reason a thread becomes memorable.

That sounds about right to me. Please don’t turn ‘stay on topic’ into a personality requirement. The right rule may simply be: move things when doing so makes the forum easier to use.

Right, and I’d add one thing. I’d split only when the side discussion becomes useful enough to deserve being found later. The Community forum can probably tolerate more wandering than a practical help thread.
