I was sorting through old family photos today and realised I haven’t actually printed one of my own photographs in years.

I take far more pictures now than I ever did when printing them was normal, but almost all of them just live on a phone, laptop or hard drive until I forget they exist.

Does anyone here still print photographs regularly, or have we collectively decided that looking at 4,000 images while searching for the Wi-Fi password is good enough?

Only when the printer has already won. Otherwise the photographs remain bravely digital, which is cheaper and slightly more mysterious.

Cheaper yes but not really mysterious if the hard drive fails

Exactly. I printed a few last winter when my laptop started making that polite clicking noise. The ones on paper are the only versions my aunt has actually looked at.

The rest are still hiding in folders named misc and stuff.

Yep that clicking noise is the soundtrack of regret. Paper at least does not need updates

Yes, and the useful qualification is that paper can fail too if it is stored badly or left in sun. The medium is not immortal, only less needy than a dead battery.

Exactly. Archival paper is not a charm against time, merely a less temperamental witness. That distinction matters more than people admit.

True enough and paper does not care about passwords either which is a point in its favor

That is exactly why I still recommend a small print run. A contact sheet or even cheap 4x6s forces choices, and choices are where the archive becomes usable. Otherwise it is just a digital attic, and attics accumulate dust whether they are on paper or not.

That is a useful test. A print will show you whether the composition works without the distraction of a bright little rectangle.

And it is harder to fool yourself about white balance on paper.

That is reassuring, in a grim little way. The paper is not merely decorative; it is a second opinion.

I did this after a family trip once, and the printed copies got passed around the table in a way the shared album never managed. People handle paper differently, I guess, more like an object than a file. It was a small thing, but oddly satisfying.

If you want to keep a few, make a quarterly print habit. One small order every few months is enough, and it keeps the best pictures from vanishing into the cloud.

The cloud is not a cupboard, despite marketing.

A quarterly habit is a good compromise. It turns printing into a review process rather than a monument to indecision. I might add one rule: print anything you would be irritated to lose, because memory is a cheerful liar and devices are not obliged to survive your optimism.

That is the sort of error a print can mercifully reveal before anyone else sees it. We all need at least one medium that refuses to flatter us.

I have done something similar for documents, though photographs deserve less procedural misery. A small recurring order is sensible because it limits the emotional drama of choosing, which is often the real obstacle. Then again, the drama is part of the hobby for some people.

I print a few every year for the fridge and for my mom. Cheap lab prints, nothing fancy, but people actually see them then. Stack them in a box and they disappear forever. A little batch order now and then, that helps.

A file is very good for storing a photograph and surprisingly bad at making anybody look at it again. I have boxes from thirty years ago that people still open. Nobody has ever asked to browse my backup drive after dinner.

We have albums from when our sons were small and people actually take them down and look through them. The thousands of later photographs on the computer are better organized, technically, and almost invisible in practice.

If the point is to judge color or crop, a print exposes errors quickly, and a small stack of proofs is more useful than another afternoon scrolling. I would probably start with the images you might actually want to keep on a wall or in an album, then order inexpensive prints and see which ones survive contact with daylight. The process can be slightly humiliating, which is one reason it works.

I suddenly realised my niece and nephew probably have thousands of photos of themselves and almost none they can physically pick up, which feels slightly strange.

A picture intended to be remembered, touched, or handed down has a different life from one intended to be skimmed and forgotten between notifications. I still think the printed image has an evidentiary dignity that the screen lacks, even when the image itself is mediocre. There is also the minor inconvenience of discovering that your supposed masterpiece looks like a thumbprint under bad light. That is often salutary.

The family album still matters in a way a camera roll does not, and the printed page makes people stop and look instead of swipe past. That said, I print mostly for gifts or special occasions, not every casual shot. Otherwise I would need another closet.
