I have no problem with breathing exercises or with people using chi as a way to describe attention and internal sensation. I do have a problem when a breathing claim is used to explain why somebody does not need distance, balance or a way to deal with a person hitting back.

Boxing makes the gap obvious. You can breathe well and still get walked into a corner. I would like to hear from people who practice qigong, tai chi or other internal methods about what changes under pressure. Which parts remain useful when the opponent is tired, moving and not cooperating with the exercise?

I wonder what you think remains when the opponent is no longer cooperative. Is it mostly breath control and calm, or do you mean timing and structure as well?

A useful test is simple enough.

Have someone pressure you with a jab or push and see whether the breathing work still lets you keep your base. If it does, fine; if not, then the breathing is a support, not the answer.

That base part is everything nah. Once you lose it, all the breathing in the world…

Do you mean base as in balance, or base as in the trained habit of recovering it quickly? I think that distinction matters here, because one sounds like a gift and the other like work.

Both sha. If you can recover fast, your balance is not really gone yet.

had a buddy in the gym say he was rooted like a tree. first hard shove and he turned into a loose fence post. we laughed, then drilled it with the wall bag and circles. no shame in being new, just dont sell it as invincible

yeah, and recovery is the part folks skip. you get bumped once and if your feet are late the whole pretty theory leaks out. same as a bad joint, looks fine till you put load on it.

Right, and you can train that with light resistance before you ever call it a fight
keep the reps honest or the drill turns into theater

That is a helpful correction, and I think recovery is the more interesting word. Balance can sound static, while recovery suggests a sentence still being finished after a pause.

nah i think you still need the static part too. if your feet are planted like bad pipe it matters how fast you move, sure, but…

Lol bad pipe is perfect there. If the base is shaky the rest will just talk.

and the funny part is people call that pressure testing like it is some secret. nah man, that is just another person trying to touch your face. if your style cant deal with that, the style is doing poetry not work

Yes, that is well put. I think many traditions mean to begin with recovery and call it power after the fact.

Yes, and I suspect that is why the word survives. It can mean something practical, but it can also rescue a bad claim from embarrassment, which is a very old trick.

People love talking like chi is magic until a real body starts pushing back. Then suddenly it is all about stance and knees and where your feet are. Funny how that works. The floor is undefeated, mostly.

I agree on the main point, but I would add one thing. Some internal work helps people stay loose and see the opening a little better. It just does not replace timing, footwork or getting off the line when somebody swings back.

The breathing still helps with nerves and keeping the body calm.
But if the other person is really coming, you still need legs and eyes no magic there.

                                            I agree, with one qualification.
What people call chi may be useful as attention to breath and posture, but it sounds misleading if it is made to promise immunity from ordinary force.

Exactly. If the claim survives contact, good. If not, it was just a slogan in a nicer shirt.
